...Doug? Did you ever work out if your power's only for human languages? Could be there's creatures making noise in hearing range that weren't here before, and that's what's bothering you...
Some animal that makes a lot of noise and hasn't been around before? You mean like these (http://www.dcmilitary.com/navy/seaservices/9_20/features/29151-1.html)? There was an article about them in the Times yesterday, too.
...Insects communicate. I don't know if the "dance language" they talk about for bees is something your power would work on, and I don't know what cicadas might have to say... but they do make an annoying noise. Maybe you hear it better?
They've been bugging the crap out of me every time I try and walk through the woods, I'll say that much.
And Doug? You've been pushing your power a hell of a lot lately playing Human Decoder Ring and playing around with languages from the future and stuff. Maybe you just got stuck "open" enough to tune in on the Cicada Porn Channel?
And on top of that, he's got a pretty darn nifty power. :)
And so do you, but if you push it too far again and end up looking for language in, I dunno, television static, I'm going to be a gentleman and let Angie get in the first spork.
I'm gonna go find my cute dork and . . . darnit. "Cicadas Getting It On" is not the soundtrack I want for a nice walk in the woods. Maybe we'll just watch TV.
Oh come on, Doug. Surely you've read at least something on the theories of animal languages. I mean, it's weird you'd start with bugs, if anything bird languages you'd have been more exposed to, but they do have languages.
Mind, it's mostly "hey, I'm here, I'm hungry, I'm horny", but it is communication.
You know, if that is what this is you could probably go and definatively answer the questions about Nim Chimpski and the other 'talking' primates.
