Okay, so I think I owe Angelo and Kitty an apology. It apparently _is_ the cicadas driving me insane.

Miles and I went down to the basement to find a terrarium for his new cicada pet (which we have named Ed). And down in the basement, the noise was a little less. As our first experiment with Ed, Miles and I decided to test and see if it was the cicadas. And every time that Ed chirped, I got this niggling little 'ping' in the back of my head. So we went to Doc McCoy, and he's whomping up something to help with the noise, which is apparently going to look like hearing aids and broadcast some white noise at a frequency to counteract the cicada noise.

Which means I can actually get a good night's sleep tonight. Thank god.

Sorry to everyone I was snippy at during my insane period.

I am going to regret this, I know it.

But I am very curious. What are the cicadas saying?

It's hard to tell, but as far as I can tell, most of Ed's chirps either meant "Hi, I'm here", or "DANGER! DANGER!"

As far as I can tell. Cicadas seem pretty dumb. Ed has a hard time figuring out the glass of the terrarium. Keeps flying into it. Luckily cicadas don't fly very fast, so he just bumps up against it a lot.

And that -bug- is in your room?= flying into the side of his new house?

Eeee.

I'm not all that crazy about bugs myself, but Miles likes his new friend, and after the help he's given me today, I can put up with a little bit of buzzing and chirping (now that it's finally not messing with my power, thank god).

If cicadas can learn "Stay," though, I vote we teach him. If he keeps thumping into that glass all night . . . my dreams are going to be weirder.

~Honestly. Doug should just tell him to stay. He does languages, right? Right. If he can understand them, he can likely figure out the basics to tell get a concept through.~

~Which is one hefty power, when you think about it.~

No, no, no, butterflies migrate south. :)

Could be worse. Jamie kept making cicada sex jokes while we were out - highly strange.

And you're welcome, and still no worries about the snippy. The occasional clever insight is why they keep me around.

Cause they were funny. I'm just saying that Doug's lucky that's not what Ed's going on about.

Very true. Be kind of a shock for Miles, too.

Well, Miles would understand it, and Doug wouldn't either when Miles was around.

As long as we don't capture any girl cicadas.

Markings? Body shape? I dunno. There's probably a book in the library, though.

And how exactly do you plan to go about doing so? Becuse that could be traumatic.

Find a book on cicadas and pray like heck that there's an obvious size or color difference between the genders?

Good luck - you're going to need it, I think.

We are far more interested in you spending time with me doing things other than fussing over cicada gender. And please excuse me while my teenaged mind makes bad puns about gender vs. sex and your interest in cicadas.

I suddenly no longer care whether Ed is short for Edward, Edwina, or Edneuter.

Did you have anything specific in mind?
